1. About JLPT (日本語能力試験)

About JLPT - EDOPEN Japan

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) was first administered in 1984.[1] That first year, the JLPT was administered in 15 countries with approximately 7,000 participants.[1] The number of JLPT participants continued to grow until 2011 when the number of test takers reached approximately 610,000 people from 62 countries around the world.[1]

Then, in 2017, the JLPT exceeded 1 million participants and continued to grow until 2019, when it will reach approximately 1.36 million participants.[2] This makes the JLPT the largest Japanese language proficiency test in the world.

In addition, the JLPT is designed to evaluate and certify the Japanese language proficiency of foreign speakers.[3] Although not uncommon, the JLPT is also taken by native Japanese speakers with specific personal goals. However, the JLPT is a necessity for foreign workers and students who want to build a career and settle in Japan. Then, the advantage of having it, which is very prestigious, is also always targeted by many foreigners.

On the other hand, you know that there are 2 main organizations that work really great for JLPT in Japan and overseas. They are (Japan Educational Exchanges and Services) JEES and Japan Foundation.[4] JEES administers the JLPT exam in Japan.[4] Meanwhile, the Japan Foundation organizes the JLPT exam in cooperation with local institutions.[4]

4 Key Characteristics of JLPT

The JLPT is a very prestigious exam among non-native speakers. The JLPT also has 4 special features that make it different from other Japanese language proficiency exams. The following are the 4 main features of the JLPT exam:

  1. The JLPT measures the communicative competence needed to perform tasks under certain conditions in everyday life. This exam does not only focus on vocabulary and grammar knowledge. However, the JLPT also tests the extent to which the candidate understands how to use the vocabulary and grammar knowledge directly in actual communication.
  2. JLPT offers 5 levels (N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5). It is hoped that the JLPT can truly measure a person’s proficiency as accurately and completely as possible. Therefore, each level has specific and specially designed items. Broadly speaking, JLPT N1 and N2 measure understanding of the Japanese language in various real-life situations. JLPT N4 and N5 measure basic skills learned and used in class. Meanwhile, JLPT N3 is the intermediate level that bridges these 2 groups.
  3. The JLPT has a special way of measuring test results, by using a scaled score. This exam uses a scaled score to provide equity and produce a score that is more accurate and fair in reflecting a person’s language ability at the time of exam.
  4. The JLPT also has a “JLPT Can-do Self-Evaluation List”. This self-assessment checklist provides students with a reference for truly representing test results. This list can be used as a basis for getting an idea of how far and what applicants can do when they reach a certain level.
