TOP 10 Medical Universities in Japan

Japan is well-known for its great achievements in the medical field around the world. 1. The University of Tokyo – Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine consists of the School of Medicine and the School of Integrated Health Sciences.

2. Tokyo Medical and Dental University – Faculty of Medicine

The whole institution is comprised of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, and the Graduate School of Health Care Studies. 

Established in 1951, the Faculty of Medicine has two branches which are the School of Medicine (six-year) and the School of Health Care Sciences (four-year). The faculty is committed to “Cultivating professionals with knowledge and humanity”

Courses offered in the School of Health Care Sciences are Nursing Science and in Medical Technology. The former is involved in Fundamental and Clinical Nursing and Community Health Nursing, and in the latter is involved in Laboratory Science and Laboratory Technology.

3. Osaka University – Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine is divided into Medical School and School of Allied Health Sciences. 4. Keio University – School of Medicine

As a “A Leading Teaching and Research University”, the School of Medicine devoted efforts to “Expanding The Possibilities of Medicine”. The IPE (Inter-Professional Education) program is provided to the students in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care, and the Faculty of Pharmacy. When providing medical care, the cooperation between doctors, nurses, and pharmacists is necessary without doubt. 5. Chiba University – Graduate School of Medicine and School of Medicine

Students are expected to reach three goals by the graduation, which are ethics and professionalism, medical and related knowledge, medical practice, communication skills, contribution to medical science, medicine, health care, and society, and scientific exploration. The school also provides an environment for students aiming to become research doctors with the professional knowledge in the early phase. 6. Kyoto University – Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine

The faculty is formed by the Medical Science Division, which cultivates medical scholars, researchers, and doctors, and the Human Health Sciences Division which cultivates nurses and other healthcare professionals. In the Medical Science Division, except for pursuing medical knowledge, the ability to utilize the theory to solve problems and to provide the patient with the proper treatment are necessary. At the same time, intensity in curing patients and the concern toward the medical system in the society are emphasized as well.

MD-PhD Course – Medical Science Division

The course is provided in two form: 

  1. After completing the fourth year in the undergraduate year, students enroll in the Graduate School of Medicine directly. With receiving their PhD, students return to the Faculty of Medicine for completing clinical training. With reaching graduation threshold, the students will be given MD and PhD degrees. 
  2. For students who have completed the MD degree, they can enroll in the Graduate School of Medicine to obtain a PhD.

7. Nagoya University – School of Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine

Under the Graduate School of Medicine, Nagoya offers the School of Medicine and the School of Health Science. In the School of Medicine, student will take a six-year curriculum including Premedical Education, Introduction to Medicine, Basic Medicine, Social Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Bedside Learning, Clinical Clerkship (selective) I,II, Basic clinical skills training, and Lecture and practices on evidence-based medicine (EBM).

8. Nara Medical University – School of Medicine

Nara Medical University was established in 1945 as Nara Medical College. Located in Kashihara city in Nara, the institution features in conducting MBT(Medicine-based Town). This is a plan mainly expecting the students to make social contributions with the professional skill they possess.The School of Medicine is divided into the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Nursing. To complete the degree in the Faculty of Medicine, students need to take the curriculum of general education and professional education. General education including liberal arts involving general subjects and basic medical knowledge. The admission quota per year is about 113 students (data based on 2022 enrollment).

9. Kyushu University – School of Medicine

Founded in 1903, the School of Medicine is composed of the Department of Medicine (six-year), Department of Health Sciences (four-year), and Department of Biomedical Sciences (four-year). There is an emphasis on cultivating medical practitioners, medical care specialists and researchers serving globally. MD-PhD Course is also available in the Department of Medicine in which students enroll in the PhD degree when completing the fourth undergraduate year. With obtaining a PhD degree, the students continue the rest two undergraduate years. 

In addition to the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry and the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences are also established in Kyushu University.

10. Tohoku University – School of Medicine

Tohoku University is a Japanese national university which is located in Sendai, Miyagi. Maybe you remember the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which the campus of Tohoku is also damaged, some students life been taken away. After the disaster, Tohoku had a further understanding of the value of local medical, and attach more importance to this part.

School of Medicine includes the Department of Medical Sciences and the Department of Health Sciences. Admission quota for Medical Sciences is around 105 students, and 144 students for Health Sciences. There are 12 educational targets for a six-year undergraduate in the Department of Medical Sciences, which the students are required to reach for becoming a doctor or researcher. The Department of Health Sciences is comprised of three courses which are the Course of Nursing, Course of Radiological Technology, and Course of Medical Laboratory Science.
